Anyone walking down Nachlat Benyamin, close to Allenby, will come across this small but fantastic roast chicken place. For me it is one of the best kept secrets in Tel Aviv, and I am terrible at keeping a secret. The best thing about the place is its simplicity and the place is Kosher. The menu consists of chicken and roast potatoes, yes let me tell you again in case you missed it, roast chicken and roast potatoes. You get it! You can have a choice of 1/4 , 1/2 or full chicken and roast potatoes. That is it! NO you cannot have a salad, you can have pickled gherkins! OK!.
Service is fast, food is excellent and well priced. I absolutely love the place. When ever I come here I remember , with a tear in my eye, Nando's flame grilled peri peri chicken. For those of you who have no clue what I am talking about I will explain.
Nandos is a take out restaurant, (we also have no concept of fast food in South Africa) that serves flame grilled chicken peri peri. The restaurant originated in South Africa and used there secret Peri Peri recipes to make outstanding food. Peri Peri or Pili Pili originates from the Swahili word for birds eye chillies. In the same was hummous hails from the middle east and champaign hails from France, Peri Peri is uniquely Southern African. The Portugese explorers used to use Peri Peri to spice up there flame grilled chicken and seafood. Over the years they added spices and herbs and recipes emerged from the best tasting chicken in world.
Capsaicin is the substance responsible for the heat in chillies. In 1912 a chemist called Wilbur Scotsville was able to develope a way to measure the strength of capsaicin in chillies. One year in a test he tried to practically measure the relative strength of different chillies and food. Tobasco Sauce (pepper sauce) was considered mild. Famous Indian curry was considered hot, Yeminite food was considered ..........OH MY G-D, you want me to put that food in my mouth again, are you -ing crazy. It took the firebrigde and a few hours to stop the poor man screaming, After that event he developed his scale.
So in Israel even though Peri Peri sauce does not exist, there are substitutes for it in this country. I am sure that it would make Wibur Scotsville cringe and the most hardened flame grilled peri peri chicken eater cry. The chicken at this store is not hot , but exceptionally tasty, it is not Nando's but definitely scores very high in my books.
Nando's is also famous for their funny commercials. I have attached 2. Hope you enjoy.
