AM:PM (Your local neighbourhood inconvenience store)

Have you ever wondered what happened to the village idiot that moved into the city, or was fired from the village. Have you ever wondered about people who are so useless that even the post office will not employ them. These questions keep me up at night, I have wondered, where do these people work? Finally I have the answer.
Go to any local AM:PM in the greater Tel Aviv area, and they are there, behind the till, or standing in the isles, looking dumbfounded at the daunting tasks ahead of them, like assisting customers.
AM:PM is what I like to call an inconvenience stores, run by idiots and sadly frequented by idiots (new olim like myself and other lazy people). The concept is sound, it is a store, like a large grocery store in any other city, with one major difference, when you go in, you might never passed the check out.
Most people go into these stores to buy small items, bread, milk, ice cream, maybe a canned good, soft drinks. I would say 10 items or less. The assumption is you go in quickly and pay quickly and BADABOOM you in and out quickly. Well how about NO.
There are usually 2 check out counters, with only one manned by the most inefficient and useless individuals one can possibly imagine or hire. The average shopping time, 5 minutes, check out time 2 hours. (Queing theory in Israel is just that, a theory, like relativity, it is interesting, but does not really exist practically) and if you are lucky , you are the only one of two people in the line.
Why is it everytime I come into the store and wait to pay for my 10 items or less, it takes an eternity. It is like entering a time portal, by the time you leave the store it feels like you have aged 5 years.
Today I watched in an almost hypnotic fascination as a customer (or victim) tried to purchase 2 sodas. We waited 5 minutes in the line for her to pay for her drinks. The check out clerk was asking all sorts of questions from the other staff members about the specials. This was like having a check out by committee. The line is getting longer, instead of assisting the line and opening up the second till point, one of the staff members (the idiot of the day or in AM:PM terms ,employee of the month) just looked on and took the monthy specials paper and fanned the first till operator. Maybe she was worried that at that fast check out pace she might be overheating, I mean it is hot here in Tel Aviv, she might blow a gasket and then where would we be. Stuck in line at the till point forever, until they can find another till replacement.
So in conclusion, Einstein hypothesised that there are two things that are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, but he was not sure about the former. If you want to see that theory in practice, go to any AM:PM and watch the employees in action..
